Have you heard of this 2D inspired Sonic game series?

Freedom planet 1 and 2 are both fast paced 2D action games inspired by Sonic and Gunstar Heroes.

Initially beginning development as a Sonic fan game back in 2011. Freedom Planet 1 became its own original game, and released in 2014. The second game released in 2022, and develops on what the original does best substantially.

There is a real good chance the name ‘Freedom Planet’ is taken from the Sonic OVA. That world is known as Planet Freedom.

Classic Sonic games like Sonic 2 and 3 were designed horizontally, focused on getting to the end as fast as possible. Higher routes were faster and it required more skill to stay on. Less skill was required for lower routes, but they were easier for players to navigate.

Sonic CD was a little strange. The time travel mechanic of the game encourages you to explore the levels more vertically. You are able to travel to a level’s past to destroy generators, and prevent a level’s inevitable bad future. I mean you can just play Sonic CD horizontally like 1 or 2, but you won’t be getting the most out of the game that way.

Freedom planet incorporates both level styles. Some levels are straight dashes to the end and  others are focused on exploration. Requiring you to move from the bottom to the top of levels to fulfill mission objectives.

Its Gunstar Heroes routes is most seen with enemy interactions. Enemies require multiple hits to be defeated and flash on screen quickly; characters have varied combat capabilities to deal with them, so it makes for an exhilarating fast paced action platformer. I generally don’t look forward to boss encounters but because of the game’s mechanics, Freedom Planet feels like a constant spectacle.

One level you can be chased by a boulder, another you’re fighting a mechanical bird while grinding on rails and you even get to fight in a giant mech all gundam style!

Besides the obvious resemblance of anthropomorphic characters, Sonic can also be credited for Freedom Planet's choice to incorporate a story into an action platforming game.

I find it charming!

It makes me wonder…
